Porsche Carrer Cup Bathurst Race Report

We decided to race online in a proper racing league race. Wins and losses, mostly losses if I'm honest.
What remains is the decomposition as a record for posterity.

The race, if you can watch the entire hour, is here:

Pre-Race
Setup for this car is tricky, mostly as there's not a whole lot to be done to it, and what's more, with no traction control it's a bit of a beast to drive consistently to be honest. Nevertheless, time was spent...

I just wasn't fast in this car. Not even close actually, Evan was a solid 4 seconds a lap faster and the crazy folks were nearly 10.

The challenge really was outright grip, I couldn't seem to get the car to grip. It rolled down to two issues. Mostly me but also tuning...

A quick search through the Interweb and there's either no-one posting setups or they're hiding them until after the race. I suspect the former, nevertheless, I found a setup for Silverstone, that'll do...

Checking it out, it wasn't too bad, I had to adjust some of it to make it symmetrical - figuring the fine tunning like that would come later, it never did, and I think it really doesn't need it at Bathurst anyway...

This got me into consistent 2:10 lap times, essentially 2 seconds better, which was certainly better than I was getting.

Happy with the setup being right(ish) for me I settled in for some testing sessions. Things were going well enough, 2:10 and occasional 2:09 was solid for me, happy days.
Though I did recall talk of tyre pressures being key in this game - a read up online and blimey, I've been running super under-inflated. This means an uneven contact patch at best and all sorts of deformation woes (and punctures) at worst.
Adding more air and getting the tyres to be evenly inflated really helped.

And so it was, a change to that, and I was into solid 2:09's and occasional 2:08's. Awesome. I messed with brakes next. Adding a diagnostics page to my sim dash to see brake temps. Cool... so I changed them to the over the top brakes to really give me some stopping power.
This worked a treat. With ABS on low it meant that I could really hammer the car into the corners and the brakes and tyres were set right and at the right temps - 20mins of practice and all good, this is key in the race report...

My final hot lap session netted me a 2:07.8 - this isn't far off the fastest I've ever driven around Bathurst in any car, super pleased and given it was with a 1/4 tank of fuel I reckoned I had a chance to be at least with the pack if not outright competitive.

I think though that what got me the final second or more was, in fact, that I slowed down and concentrated on smooth corning and throttle maintenance - the keeping of some gas on around the corner.
The comment in a recent article that racing is a series of drag races down the straights has really stuck with me - no one can pass you in a corner if you take a spot-on line (or at least a lot harder) and then if you're set for the next straight you're in a good place to challenge and be faster.

Practice & Qualifying
First issue, Evan, my racing team-mate didn't make it. We suspect SteamID issues, I also think it was highly suspect that out of 42 entrants in the race only 25 made it in. I think ACC configs somewhere limited the server numbers - not that we'll ever know! Certainly, organisers tried a restart of the servers to no avail.

I had a few laps in free practice, but didn't fare too well. No big crashes, but at 4am it's hard to be consistent (unless snoring). Track temp was woefully cold, but in the race pre-chat there was talk of it being warmer. I assumed that the track was going to warm up, so I left my tyres as they were. Big mistake.

Qualifying - yeah, a 2:12. 5 seconds off my best, and I blame a. trying too hard, b. tyres that never warmed up (quite literally still blue) and c. me trying to avoid everyone and everything, so ending up without a clean lap.

So at the very back. I was OK with this as it meant that first lap carnage (surely) wasn't going to involve me. I'd be able to tip-toe past half the field, let the track warm up and like a strategic genius I'd finish top 10 easily. I'll skip past the lead car doing a 2:02 and most of the field being not far behind...

The Race
Lots of lessons learned in this race, given I'm not going to give a blow by blow account of the entire race (fading already) I'll just list up what went well and mostly, what went not so well...
  • The strategy was fairly solid - a 1/3,2/3 with the pit stop around 20mins to fuel to the end. The assumption being that anything that happens in the race will happen early on. I was expecting 40 racers after all. I elected not to change this strategy with fewer runners, it was still valid.
  • First lap carnage didn't happen. In fact, everyone trundled round for the first lap, I almost overtook a few cars, but really on cold tyres not a smart move. The result, no places made through attrition.
  • A few bumps and scrapes early on, nothing too serious. I attribute this to ice-cold tyres. Track temp wasn't far of 10.c lower than I was used to.
  • Minor scape and light damage around 18mins in. I collected all the walls across the top. Luckily I recovered and decided to wait for a lap to pit in. This was a smart move as although rattled and a bit slower I pitted in whilst the leaders lapped me. Safest for all!
  • Position now was around 19. I was happy with that. Though mostly that was folks dropping off or having big crashes and pitting in.
  • And then not so good strategy... I didn't notice that I had to opt to change disks and pads. I assumed they were going to be changed. And being on the extreme set I had to change them...
  • More racing and frankly the car wasn't at all nice to drive. I think a combination of poor brake performance, flat-spotted tyres (didn't know you could do this with ABS) and general race stress meant I was lapping around 2:12. Not optimal, but really, I was experiencing pretty severe juddering through the wheel, something wasn't right.
  • Soon after the stop the disk wear indicator lit up. Uh oh. Then the brakes started to shine yellow into big stops. Braking was becoming a suggestion...
  • About 15mins later (I think just after halfway) I collected the wall badly through the dipper. This didn't do me any favours clearly. I will say by now the car was nearly impossible to drive. The decision on staying out and getting to the end and pitting in to remedy was made for me.
  • Down conrod straight and into the chase (biggest stop of the lot) my brakes faded completely, the tire pressures spiked (30psi+, should be 27.6psi) and it all went horribly wrong. I learned then that ACC has fade, tyre grip degradation, and a suitable lack of handling as a result. With my foot to the floor on the brake pedal I went straight on. Thankfully I'd been tip-toeing around so didn't collect anything or anyone.
  • And then I pitted in. I checked and ensured that my brakes were swapped. The tyres were swapped too, but pressures are hard to adjust in the remaining time, and indeed, what to set them to... The stop was 2mins, not bad considering I had big damage. But nearly a lap for the leaders.  For bonus grief I forgot to deselect fuel being added, so I had over 70L, and needed about 20L.
  • Rejoin was just over 20mins to go and I think 21st place.
  • From there it was a fairly standard race, though the juddering in the corners remained. I read up on carcass (tyres) deformation when they're cold and attribute most of the weird handling to that. The car skipped and juddered on every corner, it wasn't fun to drive that was for sure.
  • Ultimately I think I finished in 21st place. Probably the last of the runners. I'll take that as in terms of setup for the race I missed the mark and the rest of the race was managing that consequence.
Takeouts
  1. Tyre pressures are critical. If they're not right pit in.
  2. Check the track time - I never noticed it was afternoon till Evan pointed it out. The track was never going to warm up.
  3. Brakes. Change them. And probably don't race on what is a test pad or something.
  4. Preparation is key. This I did right, pre-race practice and testing set me up for success. Mostly.
Would I race again? Sure I would. I'd be happier in a slower class for now as it's a very different thing to race a 1-hour race to what we normally do. And I'll be honest, I'm looking forward to GT4 racing in ACC. I think it may be closer to what I'm capable of - being an "AM" driver as I am...

And finally a huge shout out to TheSimGrid: https://www.thesimgrid.com/
This is the group that I raced with, lots of effort from everyone, too many to mention, but certainly, if the intent is to bring this sort of racing to enthusiasts then they're onto a winner.

Bonus content...
The results are in, and yes I had a 21st place, but the other non-runners are counted, so I was mid-field! Let the record stand that I finished mid-field!!! Ha.

Not sure when I'll see you again my friend. I've enjoyed driving you, less so being a passenger into the chase and I promise to sort the pressures out next time!

Four All! (see what I did there)

My love affair with Dirt4 continues, despite WRC8 being released soon - and that is better clearly, it's four more than Dirt4!

And I've done a cool thing, a stupid thing and a better thing. In that order.

The cool thing is that I've set up a club, only a few years late, but it's here on Dirt4.
And coolerer, I've set up a championship!

The stupid thing? I didn't set restart up, so I managed a DNF on the first stage and that's it for me. I'm relegated to Clark-of-the-course status and can only sit back and see if anyone joins it. Hint: you'll win.
Worse, as it was the inaugural event I put it over September pretty much in its entirety. Which means that I can't have another one on the go, it seems. And I can't cancel it either. Boo.

All is not lost though, as now we have a new championship! And its great, as it has both front and rear-wheel drive cars, and it also has two events each with 3 stages. So all up six stages with service stations, and crucially as it turns out, the ability to restart the entire event.

I am excited about this for sure - it'll be a good race I hope, and if it works, well we can have infinate championships by simply regenerating the tracks. At least until the servers are turned off anyway!

550pp RM V8 4 door Adjustable wing

Following another great night's racing of this class I thought it worthy to share not only the cars I've got that are suitable but also the cars that may be in the game.
It's fair to say that we'll race them again, so time to spend some pennies...

Some I've tuned, some not, spot the wing time:

Classic all rounder car. Aussie Icon.

Ballistic in a straight line, class car.

My Go To car, love the look and it's no slouch.

New this week! Glued to the road. Maybe too slow.
This is the later model S4. Early ones were not V8.

Even I couldn't put a wing on this - so wrong.
Note this is the early S6. Check those cylinders!

Not a bad TC500 car - looks great too.

Great car. Handling questionable.

Great, but too slow once tuned.

A winner for some. Certainly works in this class.

Fast in corners. Slow at top end it seems.

Can this have a wing added? Not sure.

Prototype car - somewhat not allowed really.

So that's the list as far as I can tell. Not a crazy amount of cars by any stretch, but certainly plenty to make this class a viable one. Not sure I like the idea of pickups in the racing, but really I doubt very much they're a viable racer in what has been some very intense racing.

To reiterate the rules for this class:
  • 550pp
  • Road car
  • Four doors
  • Racing Medium tyres
  • Adjustable after market wing fitted
  • V8 engine (Check car info)
  • No race cars - i.e. no sponsor liveries (fit a number if you like).
And that's it, any era any make.
Have fun and see you all online!

Race Night #1 Results

And here are the results from the night.
As always, the spreadsheet is on the right if you want more detail, otherwise, enjoy:

A top night as always I think you'll agree.

This Thursday I'm away, and so is Evan (no not together!), so keep an eye out on other's hosting a room to race in. It's not a points night so no trouble there.

The next race night is on the 17th of July and is another CR400 race night:

Replay time

Well I said I would when I won a race, and sure enough, the planets have aligned, the horse has bolted, hell has indeed frozen over and GT_Pops wasn't racing...

Results posted when I get time in the next couple of days.

And this one because, well, because RUF.

New Season

The new league season is upon us. Or in other words, I finally got round to working it all out.
There are a few things to note about this season:

  • No full on endurance races with points - I just can't sit for that long at the moment.
  • Classes are:
    • CR400 (Classic Racers) - Our trusty 400pp cars we've been racing.
    • HRC460
    • TC500
    • GT590
  • I've opened up GT590 to be cars from any country.
  • Read the charter (on the right) it covers car classes and general racing.
  • The full race log is also on the right, and updated. I take shots from that to give results etc, but if you want a copy feel free to download.
  • Clubman this season is the Senna F3 car - you'll need to get that to obtain points.
  • Points for Clubman remain seperate from the championship.
  • As the F3 cars are going to be faster than most classes I'll race them after the championship races.
  • We'll use the off nights for thrash and catch up if we have a bad PSN night.
  • I will try and remember to announce early the next points race, but we'll endeavour to stick to this list in any case.
So without any more fuss, here's the points nights calendar (Click on the images to make bigger):

Here's the extract from the classes detail in the charter:

To clarify that last point (e.) if you want to race in a car that's not class compatible, you're welcome to but you'll forfeit all but the lowest points possible.

And if you want the full season details, they're here:

And because I like pics of the cars, here are a few:

Tuesday, 27 May 2014

They said I might need a frame to help me get around.

They were quite correct.

I reckon this has lopped off a solid half second on my general lap times - certainly feels nicer to be driving with this setup...

Anyhoo, I'm back, or rather my back, is better at least it's not as bad as it was and the drugs do work.

This Thursday I'll be back online, possibly only doing a few races, we'll see, but I'll have the room up and running and we can discuss our next season, I'd like to talk about classes of cars.

So far I'm thinking that we have (for points races):

  • TC500 - This will be the premier/newest car class we have.
  • HRC460 (tyres TBC)- the current classic racers class.
  • 400pp & S/H tyres - 1970 or before. Old tat road cars basically.
  • 550pp & R/H 1970 or before Racers. Classic racing cars.
  • Rocket Racers - the one make class all on it's own, every points night.

The only thing I can think here is that we're not exercising any of the newer stuff. However, as we're going to be running alternate weeks for points (as we used to) I'll run more modern racers on those nights.
The plan here is that we'll have a defined type of car (GT590, 650Open etc) and then vote on tracks throughout the evening.

Also, given there's been the huge update, I reserve the right to introduce some other racing as we progress, but we'll do that on the non-points nights. The only caveat to that is that if we have old school tracks I'll amend the season to include them somewhere.

If we end up having a course maker, they'll not appear in any seasonal/points nights, although we may play with custom tracks on the non-points nights depending on play-ability.

And what have I been doing whilst I can't actually sit on a chair?
I fired up my old PS2 and played this:

Turns out that on a modern tv with component input Tourist Trophy is most playable, and no need for a steering wheel!

Cheers

Season Standings

So the tally is in, and Pops you're it.

Race results:

What an excellent night's racing. The 650's can always be a bit fickle, the cars spreading out across the field, but not tonight, well, not too much. As often happens with a larger field there ends up being two races, front runners and back markers - I'm cool with that, the boost helps close the gap a bit, and of course it's all about the racing.

For me, the Bentley ran well, and no issues with tyres, only with foolish mistakes, but to be fair I don't think I/We would have caught Hoggy and his Toyota racer.  Top driving there chap, a demonstration if you will.

And two new starters, SFoamy (we shall call you Foamy) and Yould951(Yould). Not the best cars for the job, but excellent racing and certainly in the mix with the racing so great stuff.

Special mention to Evan this week for staying with us for the entire night's racing, a rare treat!

Season results:

As mentioned, Pops, you've dominated this season, and well deserved, between you and Hoggy we've all had to raise our games somewhat, good stuff. I think next season may be a bit more of a mix up, we'll see...

So the points:

Pops, you broke my points listing on the righth hand side, I've had to introduce another multiple of 10, you've gone over the hundred mark. Great stuff.
My high place is testament to racing in all the races - as I host them I'm always in there somewhere and the points add up. My second place at Spa did lift me up too though, Chris you'd have had third otherwise.

And that's it. Season over.

Pops, here's your trophy:

Next season:

And to business, discussion points feedback:

  • Rocket racing - a complete class for this - every race night. i.e. single make.
  • GT590 will be retired for a season.
  • More HRC460 races.
  • Maybe one make specials.
  • More "slower" class cars - with slipper tyres.
  • Epic enduro races are out - mindful we need our beauty sleep.
  • Probably not going to change the night folks, unless to a weekend.

Race #9 Results

Top racing last night folks and a good call to bring it down to 12 laps - maybe 15 may have been more in keeping with the enduro approach to racing these cars, but I'm only saying that because of my disastrous tyre strategy that saw me go from what could have been a solid second place at least to fourth.

Official results

Sfoamy, you get a point for starting, a drop out will not matter post that point. Same for you Evan, though of course you dropped out later... much later. So late in fact you were leading on the last lap as I recall. "Adult words" indeed!

Next race
The next race is the final race of the season, which means that it's double points. So Pops, if you boycott the next race, and someone wins both (with six racers racing) anyone with 40 or more points could take the win. By coincidence I have 41 points, control the room and it's limited to friends only...

And the races?

Same cars as before unless it was faster than mine, then it's something else, slower...

Next season
So questions below got a bit of a mention last night.
Current thinking is:

  • More of the slower classes, or at least give the 590 class a rest. Happy for that.
  • Rocket racing. Yup, a single make class is a great idea, we'll do this.
More as I get feedback.

Also, you can subscribe to this blog, if you do I'll add you to my gmail updates account too, which I'm more likely to use given I can email from work (and posting pics of Dick Dastardly is a touch harder...).

Cheers
Andrew

League Update

GT590 Race #8 Results
A sterling job by all but me it seems. For me GT590 has been a terrible class. I just can't find a car that I like and even comes close to the rest of the field, then it's spin, boost and repeat. For such a fun class for some it's not been much fun at all! So I'm changing the rules for next season! (see below).
Evan's really found his pace with his 590 car. And as this vid shows, it's possible in real life too!

Results
I hang my head in shame...

As usual, season standings are on the right hand side. Pops, you're still able to be beaten. Not least as the last race of the season is a double points - so for an enduro, it's double double points. I'm saving myself for that race you see...

Next race
Into the big cars now. 650Open - this is 650pp, Open tyres, Traction Control allowed, and no four wheel drive cars (the 4x4 R35 racer was unbeatable at 650pp). Hint: The Le Mans racers are key. Time to get saving!

And yes, that's an enduro race this time around. So double points. It'll also have night racing, tough to do so practice folks!

Next season
So as we crest towards the end of the season, time to think about the next. Questions I've got in my mind that could do with discussion are:

  1. Shall we extend GT590 to all countries - to allow the BMW/Audi racers that are in GT6.
  2. Should we shuffle the season, so not all one class together.
  3. Should we do more of the "slower cars". The racing is arguably better.
  4. Any new classes requested?
  5. Shall we move the night - it would be great to have Callum back racing with us.
  6. Should TC500 ban FWD cars - in GT6 they seem to have the edge, or is it the drivers?

Race #7 Results

Another epic race folks.
Bringing in the tyre wear was a great idea, though Hoggy's love of Monza shone through I think - and it repaid him handsomely with a drive through... Unlucky chap.

But not as unlucky as Evan. Your handicap in racing is your WiFi - I feel like buying you a 10m cable so you can go direct. Still, a point for starting, if not what you deserve for a stellar qualifying (or is that interstellar?).

And remember folks - double points for endurance...

Next race

Back to the normal grind in the next race...

Interestingly we're doing the Americana thing then, Daytona road is cool, and of course Laguna Seca is better!

See you tomorrow...

Points update

Not sure if anyone's following the championship, but here's the results as I had them for what has been a few races now..

Race #5 (delayed)

Race #6 (GT590-4)

So there we have it. In the previous post there was the replay from the Fuji 590 race, and a great bit of motorsport it was too.

Gentleman Racers
I'll make comment about newbie drivers and hot heads too. Certainly we all enjoyed a closer kind of racing in the TC500 race (Race#5) but if you watch this replay there's plenty of typical accidental rubs only a few 'dives down the inside'.
So, newbie - remember you're racing real racers not AI. For the rest of us, give him space, if he's going to crash let him have the space to do so.
I'll finish by saying that the Fuji race appeared to be better than the Cape Ring Race - if we don't want penalties then please observe gentleman rules.

Championship Racing
So who's winning the championship? Pops of course... but not by much, a couple of average races has meant hoggy has crept up fast. And whilst we have reasonable fields it's possible that others will catch up if we continue to race hard like the last 590 race. My guess, Pop's advantage with the lower spec cars will be lost with the higher ones, but that's a guess!

Next Race
It's a big one, not only is it a test of endurance for our cars, but it's a test of endurance for my plasma TV. I'm nervous about that and considering turning off the TV as I pit in....

Race on folks!

Back to the blog

It's been a while.
Sorry for that, very busy at the moment and finally getting on top of things.

By way of apology, here's a vid of the Fuji race, great stuff...

I have the results all over the place, I'll post them soon. Promise!

Race #4 Results (and WTF happened to Race #5?)

Hi All,
Race #4 results first.

So not so many folks online in the first race, and compounded by my dropping out. And that doesn't tell the tale of me winning into the final lap. Tsukuba likes 4wd cars and my Evo loved that race. At least against an M5 and a Carlton, which in fairness both were overly competitive in any case, despite Bismark proportions.
Still, about the closest I've come in recent years to throwing a controller at the screen I think. bah!

Race #5
Thanks PSN. Thanks for dropping all of us like dog eggs from a collie after eating a box of after eight mints.
Racing was not to be, and it was the last race of the TC500s, I had a good feeling about that race too, my Jaaaag would have been well suited to those tracks and so long as a couple of our drivers had aneurysms I'd have been in there.

Next race
Well we have a choice...
We can have the missing race of last week - and I know we'll all have cars for that.
Or we can do the DTM racing that is in the calendar. Tempting!

Personally, being the stickler for control that I'm not, I'd say we do the DTM thing. I'll send a PSN out shortly.

If we don't have the cars for this we'll fall back to TC500 which we all know and love.

DTM Rules
It's all about the rules eh.
As per the calendar:

  • German Road/Race car; or
  • DTM Race car
  • 580pp
  • TC allowed
  • Racing Med Tyres (made this bit up).

Welcome
So we have (probably) a new driver. Alex (FrenchieBMX) is a colleague from work who's finally sorted his Internet connection so can race on. He's new to GT6, which basically means I'm now going to be scoring 2 points in a race for a while. Woohoo!
Seriously, welcome to Alex and hope you enjoy the racing.
Avid readers of the blog will have seen him rousting around on his BMX in a video posted a while back.

Race#3 Results

The results are in, and they are thus:

What this doesn't do justice to though is the ongoing love affair (not Bro enough?) with the TC500 class.
I think this will be the last season we have the FWD/2-Door rule though, the Renault and for that matter the Civic are just too fast. Anyone who's spent time in GT6 using a FWD car will know that they handle so much better than they did in GT5. And the 4 door rule is great - the cars are compromised somewhere in their makeup, so cars are fast in different places.

I'm sad though, I should have been a better contender at Bathurst. I have to blame the spin I had, and I've made it worse by un-mapping my instant reverse button.I didn't think it would matter now that one can simply bang down the box, but in a race it's seconds spent trying to get from 5th down to reverse.
Re-map time I think. But in fairness that wasn't why I was so far down the field. Mostly it was because you lot are better drivers. Dammit!

Replay er yes. To follow...

Next race
Interesting short track this next race, I wonder if it's the 4wd time to shine...

And Trial Mountain - these cars love Trial Mountain.

Great season folks, race on!

Racing tomorrow night

Hi Folks.

Action Replay
I've not uploaded the replay from the last race, it's sat waiting for some bandwidth. And if I'm honest it's not our finest hour as every time I swapped cameras I managed to catch the next crash. So here are some pics of the race to keep us in the mood...

Just past crash #2

Arty sort of thing, or something.

Race night
So the event that's coming up this week is the first TC500 race.
Remember the rules - 500pp, race medium tyres and either a four door road car or front wheel drive two door. Testing in GT6 suggests that the front wheel drive cars may have the edge this season - that and Callum's Pocket Rocket Renault.

Or, if you've had a sense bypass and the racing isn't going to eclipse 130mph, and is in a straight line (to cope with a 2000kg "lightweight"option), this:

Which I think you'll agree is stunning in every way except performance in either straight line or cornering... Oh and it has one gear, "D", which means that it's not fun to drive either.

I'm calling dibs on this:

The civic is epically fast, corners like a dream and of course is compact and FWD. So you'll see me a half lap behind in this then...

Official details
I'm lazy, and it's easy, here are the details:

See you tomorrow night for the racing!

Race results

Quick update today with the race results. More on the next race when I upload the crazy Matterhorn replay!

Official Results

What these results don't talk about is how errr different these tracks were. I don't think any of us have ever enjoyed Big Willow (maybe in a different context). It's slippery, with tight corners and load of over brow badness. Actually, much like the 'other context'.

Other news
You'd think after so many seasons we'd have it sorted. But I'm going to amend the charter:

Issue: Disconnects in Qualifying.
Resolution: When a driver is disconnected during a qualifying the room owner/race organiser can call for a practice/race scenario with final qualifying order.
This means that qualifying will continue, with the disconnected driver(s) reconnecting and waiting. Once qualifying is completed the places will be noted and the race type changed to practice/race.
In open practice the cars will assemble on the first lap in qualifying order and disconnected drivers will assemble at the back of the line in disconnect order (first disconnect first etc.).
Once the grid is in formation the race organiser will start the race.
Where a driver passes the field (including the race organiser doing that sideways with full brakes and lock on, ooops) a verbal call will be made to continue or reassemble - assuming enough track remains on the open lap.
