League Race #0 Official Results

Well...
Just four of us last night, still good racing of course, but you've got to be in it to win it as they say.

The Merc racing was superb, first race saw some very close racing indeed, though low boost with so few racers meant that I had my very own race going on somewhere off the back following a spin on lap 3.

Second race was better - we all raced nice and cleanly, and all came in pretty close in the final cut. Though George went from hero to zero following a chicane cut due to moved barriers.

Super smooth racing from Evan saw him bag both wins.

Official Results:

Race 1
1 - Evan
2 - Chris
3 - George
4 - Andrew

Race 2
1 - Evan
2 - Chris
3 - Andrew
4 - George

Commentary:
If we had points in this race - we don't we'd have:
Evan - 8
Chris - 6
George - 3
Andrew - 3

Could be a run away season for Evan - who incidentally would have won last season had we had one more racer on the grid at the last race. So folks, please do race, it makes a difference to all aspects of the racing, not just a cool grid!

Other news:
I'll upload a video over the weekend - being booted last night gave me excuse enough to not bother.
Also, I'll publish the race calendar for the season, enough of you think this is a good idea, and it'll allow some practice to be done - if anyone wants to veto that let me know, I have a preference but happy to take advice either way.

FCT GT5 League Race #0 Winter Season

Oh yes...
It's the start of the new season and what race we have to start with...

The circuit:

Nurburgring GP/F - Iconic, historic, and not nearly as long as the other half...
This track is new to the league this season, so apart from Paul (no pressure) who uses this as a reference/practice track we'll all be in the same boat, and speaking of boats...

The car:

That's right Merc SLS AMG '10. A German car on a German race track - expect to be met with a few beach towels on the start line.
Anyway, you probably don't have this car, so how do you practice?

Arcade!
On the very opening title screen, go into arcade mode and select the GP/F track, then select arcade cars - it's in there, towards the bonkers end of the car list (Yes, I tried the Zonda R, it wouldn't be fun).
As an aside, this is a fine way to practice with cars such as the GT500/JGTC skyline and supra as they'll be the same engine spec as the one's in the races we have.

Official Race Info:
Event Date: 29-Mar-2012
Time: 9:00 PM
Race Starts: 9:15 PM
Lounge: FCT GT5 Andrew
Track: Nurburgring GP/F
Laps: 4
Car: Mercedes SLS AMG '10 (arrive and drive)
Tyres: Race Medium

Other info
Paul will tell us that a sorted 587pp car can hit the two minute mark around here. This isn't a whole lot slower, except.... we'll be doing it on medium tyres. They're just more fun like that!

We'll certainly not be using high boost in this race. Plan is to use low boost, but if we have too much shunting expect to go to no boost and/or high penalties. Be warned and be safe (to others) - a reminder is that if you've out braked yourself you should take to the grass and avoid a smash with the other racers, simple kinetics means that if you don't folks are going to crash as a result of your action.... having said this, accidents happen and apologies should always be accepted.

Looking forward to a top night's racing again folks...

Saturday 24 March 2012

It's Gt500, not JGTC - Apparently...

Anyway,
Here's a question, do we all have a spare $950k?
If we do, then I reckon we could/should add another class to our already top season. Or maybe do a spin-off Super League mini-season.

Racing what?
These:

Basically extend what I've been calling the JGTC Skyline and Supra into an all out Japanese race car series.

To be clear it would have to be Japanese brand racing cars (Toyota, Honda, Lexus, Nissan, etc) and looking at the cars we'd either have to limit PP to 580, or all agree on some cars not being suitable. Max appears to be around 590pp. Maybe not fast enough? I'd trial racing mediums, but probably go with open. Of course it would be all aids off except ABS.

Thinking that to include another class of cars in our 8 race season would spoil our ability to get some extended racing out of our various favourites. So probably something another night, but then we don't all have a lot of spare time do we.

Vote!
Thoughts welcome on what we could do. Perhaps next season, so something to look forwards to and to start saving/practising for. Anyway, voting is to the right (according to the polls).

Just because...

As I had the recording, here's another race from the last race night, duelling the Skyline & Supra JGTC cars:

I wonder if there's a way we can get a league race class for all the JGTC cars for next season - I'll ponder!

Pointless race night - Rome Reverse.

Well folks,
That was the largest racing field I've ever raced in online, and I reckon it went pretty well.
Here are some observations of the night I'd welcome feedback on:
  1. With so many racers, waiting on the last folks to arrive is a pain. On non-league nights we likely start early. For league nights it stands at 9pm start unless we all wish to bring it in a bit. Where we do decide to start early and someone is online (I can check) then I'll set the race laps to a suitable low number so racing completes in a timely manner.
  2. Again, big field, careful with the punting - actually I think we did pretty well on that score. Minor incidents in the most part.
  3. Hooning... driving up the wrong way on the track or causing others to crash during practice - this means that the driver you hit may not get a hot lap in, affecting their grid position. Please save it until the race start countdown begins.
  4. Cars - the classes are clear. Not so much of an issue in the pointless races, but in a league race you'll get minimum points whatever your finish position is.
  5. TC500 - how do we feel about 4wd Vs. 2wd? Baloo was brave enough to field a F/F car, which in fairness wasn't a total loss, but certainly was outclassed by the 4wd cars I think. Thoughts welcome on this one as not sure if worth worrying about. Personally, probably not as we can all buy something with traction if we want too...
  6. Boost - as we've all proven ourselves as capable racers we'll move to low boost for all races. No - boost maybe in the future, but some is handy for crash catchup.
  7. I'm thinking of publishing the tracks we'll race this season, but not with classes we'll be racing on them - this is to stop people like me (honestly I don't know what to pick at the moment) from over practising and having the advantage -though boost should sort that I suppose.
  8. Finally, I probably have 'favourite' tracks, and others may have different opinions. I'm more than happy to take race suggestions, especially where they make use our of our three race car classes. So certainly put forward car/track combos and we'll get them into discussion. Please, no complex scenarios though (like the banger racing last year), with so many drivers that's not going to work. Also consider some folks don't have specific cars.
Enough boring stuff, here's one of the Rome Reverse races from last night:

If we keep this up we're going to have an awesome season!

Thursday 22 March 2012

I've gone too far...

When good testing goes bad...

In fairness it is 500pp and something like 700Bhp, just a slight issue as with all the weight trimming it's still over 1800kg's.

Tonight's racing will indeed be TC500 class, and expect to run around Rome reverse (like we did for the 70's racing). A few of us did a test race last night around there and with boost on it was some excellent close racing.

Race on!

Monday 19 March 2012

Non-league race 22 March

Hello folks
Apologies for not doing the hourly updates, I've been busy testing my cars out to see what will race well as we get into the season...

TC500:
There's a heap of choice out there as it turns out, here's just a few that have been more interesting...

If you're desperate to race a skyline in this class...

Extended testing will find hover car mode, cornering is an issue.

The boring rep car that I'll probably end up racing.

So there's a few. There's more than a few in my garage, so again folks, if you've not got a car let me know and I'll gift one for the race night in question.

As an aside, I'm finding these cars are handy in the seasonal events - there's a 500pp class there with open tyres at the moment and well sorted TC500 car will blitz the opposition in a race, even with Race/Med tyres on, so you can buy a car, tune it and make back what you spent on it.

And, every time you race a seasonal the second hand car market updates, and there's nearly always something suitable for the class in there... it's like a perpetual motion machine!

650Open:
There can be only one...
Detuned to 650pp this set a clean (no cutting el rouge) 4:09 around Spa.
Thank you and goodnight!

Thursday night race night:
This week is a pointless week, so open planning around the racing. But expect to race your TC500 around a street circuit (we've raced there before), and I think we should also test race the 650Open class too, though if not everyone has one of these expensive beasts this week we can hold off for a few weeks...

Toscana:
Also, as we'll have some newcomers we'll do the Toscana race. To get to it go to community, select me and then go to the tracks tile (bottom left) like you'd go to your own created tracks. Or search online how to...

Expect to use your favourite 587pp car for this.

New Season - Practice race at Fuji

Please excuse the cheesy music.
It's a long story.

Good opening race for the new season folks. Welcome Chris, who did pretty well on the night to be honest - a well deserved win in the Skyline at Trial Mountain. I'll have to re-record that, some cable issue somewhere caused a load of glitching.

But what of the first race?
Could it get any closer? True I had the boost on high but even so, that was a close race. In fact every race was close tonight. I'll take advice on if we want to have boost as high all the time - the only issue I can see is if folks want to have the chance to win fair and square, boost makes that hard.

Here's a vid of the race

Good watching I reckon. Up until the last lap when the glitching starts. No idea what that is, but the S-video cable is on the way out, I'll fit my spare...

Other news
I mentioned in an email that I'm going to allow traction control in the 650Open class. This will make it easier for the non-steering wheel folks to race I think, and really will help keep it close.

Also, the cunning thing with the 500TC and 650Open class is that you'll notice that many of the seasonal events in-game are now 400pp, 500pp and 650pp - so you'll have a maxed racer for the seasonal races, clever eh.

Nascar?
Anyone fancy a go in Nascar - would do a race with something other than a plain oval, Indy Road Course for example. There's in-game cars, so there's no need to buy a bus. Could be fun with the larger league race field we now have.

More on cars...

What about this car nonsense then...

Right, well, you'll of course noticed that the charter link on the right over there has been updated with the new charter in easy to read PDF format, accessible by all sorts...

Most of it is the standard guff from the previous one, but the 'rules' section has been trimmed. The two new bits you should know about is the red flag rules, read up on that in the charter, and more importantly the cars we'll use in the racing...

Three new classes:

We'll continue to use our 587pp road cars, or 'Exotique' class. Nicely cheesy I think you'll agree.
Which means cars like this:
And this...

The next new class...
We'll also be doing TC500. This is 500pp road cars (by charter definition) with four doors and racing medium max tyres. Now whilst you think it's just going to be Subaru and Mitsubishi 4wd cars, there are cars like this:
And this (though only the brave and all that..):
And this:

And finally, we'll have one last class, 650Open class. This is anything allowed in the charter (no F1 or X cars), including racing cars, up to 650pp. Expect to do endurance races with cars like this:
And this:

That's really a lot of choice!
The details are in the charter, but really, it's quite simple. Buy three cars, one you already have, one needs 4 doors and 500pp and one can be anything with 650pp. Expect to race all of them in the season.
And, we'll also of course race the standard in-game cars in an arrive-and-drive style, showcasing just who is the best driver on the night (and generally ending up with some very close races of course!).

Looking forwards to some excellent races with these extra classes of cars folks, race on!

League House Keeping

Time to tune up the cars folks, a new season is upon us...

New slick rules
I've re-written the race charter. Or at least sanitised it to reflect the way we've raced (why change our perfect racing eh).
In addition I have also had a stab at handling network dropouts so we're not left trying to restart long endurance races.
I've also tidied up the rules around cars, see below...

The car's the star
Expect three standard driver's car classes (like our 587pp roadies) along side the usage of the in game pre-set cars. These classes to be announced soon!
Also, I've included a definition of what a road car is, and put in an exclusion around F1 and X-Type cars in the league charter.

Tracks
We'll continue as we are, with potential for a designer courses - especially on non-league nights. If a designer course is slated for a league night, plenty of forewarning and practice time (they can be downloaded) will be available.

Enough talk what can we expect?
  • Street racing.
  • Some longer races - we liked the endurance races I think.
  • Something very American.
  • None of the following: Rally, kart, banger - they were all shite this season.
  • Arrive and drive - racing stock cars, no need to tune a car up.

And when can we expect it?
A couple of weeks non-league racing is a good idea I think.
I've put together a new race-log (I'll send out the completed last one), and I'll find a spot to host it presently, but here are the tentative dates (Thursday night remains race night!):
  1. 29 March (Practice Race)
  2. 12 April
  3. 26 April
  4. 10 May
  5. 24 May
  6. 7 June
  7. 21 June
  8. 5 July
  9. 19 July
Usual off weeks are non-league race nights for fun. Please do let me know if this setup is going to cause any major problems, we can shuffle.

Members only please
I think running a reasonably closed league (no late comers) worked reasonably well, certainly we all got to know each other's driving habits.
To keep the league alive I've invited some colleagues from my new work (do I have to rename the league?). I'll also say that any other FCL employees are welcome. I'll remove Adam though (he's not been in touch since moving on).
This means that currently we have six racers, though George has already mentioned he's going to be busy a lot soon... Our maximum league size won't be past ten members, so don't invite the world, but obviously a few more are most welcome..

Bernie Bernie Bernie...
I take it that we'll continue with my running of this side of the league, I enjoy it and I think this works better than a round-robin approach to organising the racing. Comments welcome.

That's it folks, race on!

League Race #8 La Sarthe - Season Finalie

It's all over.

Snif.

The season finale has run it's course on the legendary Le Mans track. I think the hype possibly outstripped the event in the end.

Special mention to George - and his ISP/Router. Such a shame you dropped out mate, that Masser' had every chance to win, time to swap something out and come back faster next season eh.

So what of the results?

Official Results:

1 - Evan (20 points)
2 - Andrew (16 points)
3 - Paul (12 points)
4 - Rod (8 points)
5 - George (4 points) DNF

And so where did our season end up eh? So many points in that last race has shook it up nicely...

Season Standings:

1 - Andrew (68 points) - stewards enquiry for race fixing pending.
2 - Evan (67 points)
3 - Paul (40 points)
4 - George (38 points)
5 - Rod (31 points)
6 - Baloo (18 points)
7 - Adam (06 points)

So there we have it. I think the message is consistency, in the racing and in attendance.

Evan you're super consistent. It's scary, once you're in the lead it's very hard to get it back. Now you've found a competitive car we're in trouble...

Paul, blinding last race and it's grabbed you a season podium. Awesome effort and I'd have never thought that Lambo could have pulled it off, but the results show...

George, your racing season didn't include a couple of races early on, and of course we had a couple I think where you dropped out - that's what killed your season mate.

Rod, I reckon if you get a car that you're comfortable with you'll be a major contender in the next season, of everyone's game raising (we're all much, much faster) I reckon you've come on the most.

Baloo, Anything we can do to help you get online and race - you've got to be in it to win it dude, and your RX7 is spot on for Le Mans. Other tracks? We'll find out eh.

Adam. Helloooo, anyone there? Earth to Adam? Nope? Let me know if you want in next season...

I'll find a new share point for the race log so you can all have a look at the spread of results.

Race notes:
So, of the race...
Another top race of course. And you know whilst I didn't see you Rod/Paul, I watch the replay and you were never very far behind at all to be honest. I do think that at Le Mans a 4wd struggles on the back straights - they're damn quick around other circuits, but maybe the 2wd cars have a better top end where it counts. Other tracks I think will level that a great deal.

And, here's the race in youtube glory;

A fitting way to end the season I think!

Next season

Watch this space... more soon.

Testing testing testing.

Your virtual desk visit starts here...

So I've been conducting a load of testing around Le Mans. Mostly as my confident world was rocked when my most awesome Vantage decided to plow straight on at random moments in the last league race. And of course, I can't lose to Evan, it's championship over for me...

So here's what I've learnt as a result of my testing:

Track Walk:

Dunlop curve - you can cut this almost completely and not get a penalty. In fact hugging that bend is good as it's adverse camber (or at least neutral) so even a little wide and your car is stuffed going into the Dunlop Chicane.

Make sure you're clean going in, slow in and fast out as you want to be hanging to the right of the track before you hook into the left hand over brow of the start of the Esses. You need to be turning in as you're under the Dunlop bridge otherwise you're too wide for the right hand bend with the cones on it. And that you want to be hugging tight in on the right.

As you drop down into the Esses proper, through the right hander with green cones (apols to those colour blind) don't over cook it. The car needs to be really planted going into the tight left/right of the esses so you're set up nicely for that short straight - there's a fair bit of speed to be had before you get to Tetre Rouge.

The corner that is Tetre Rouge is important as it sets you up for the first long straight. I find slow in fast out is good. But I don't worry overly about going too wide, so long as you're not really wide the penalties aren't applied and you can avoid the rather nasty rumble strips, which if you hit with an unbalanced car under throttle can kick you out completely. Better to let the car you're racing get away and slipstream rather than try and go round the outside here.

Not much to say about the Mulsane straight(s), Hugging a wall can help as it seems a bit smoother, and of course you're only going to be slip stream passed on one side...

The Mulsane corner is the pig corner really - slightly wrong and it's into the frankly vast sand trap. I find as soon as the gear indicator start flashing I slam the brakes on and drop to somewhere around 3rd or 4th. Then whilst on the brake a quick blip on the throttle and down the remainder. Amazingly if you're not on the complete edge trying to scrub speed this is a really easy open corner, 9/10ths and there's position to be had.

Down the next straight is all about just not clipping the curbs, any grass and it's 360.deg spin time. Really hook in on the right through the bends as around 300kph+ they're pretty tight.

Indianapolis is much the same deal as the Mulsane corner above, but you can take it at a reasonable speed - often I find I over brake then blip for a bit between the two sections, not clean and probably a bit of time to be had. If I go proper wide, sometimes it's best to head on to the other side of the sand as there's bitumen there. Also, several times I've had huge moments round that bend, there's heaps of track, so if you think you might make it, turn in and have a go at drifting it. Good luck!

Arnage, well, that's just a slow corner, don't rag it too much down the straight into it, as there's no run off and no room to go wide - a stack here will mean reverse, and that's a lot of wasted time.

The Porsche Curves are best in around 3rd gear and really aim for the apex, going even a little bit wide means that the next bend is more acute - it all builds up to a complete failure three bends in...

My nemesis is the Ford Chicanes, any cutting here and it's crippling penalty time - it took me from hero (almost) to zero in the last race, I won't be making the same mistake again...

Cars:

We all have our own cars of course, and I've been testing all sorts. Here are some observations...

  • Min 600Bhp - 640Bhp+ is good. 680Bhp+ will get you down the straights at speed.
  • It really is all about horsepower - weight isn't so critical on a straight, and will sit the car down too, so it flicks less. But...
  • Corners need a lighter car - I've found 1300kg+ is OK, 1400Kg+ and you'll struggle to stop and turn.
  • Mid engined cars have issues around PP points, i.e. they rank higher than a F/R configuration.
  • But, 4WD cars are even more highly scored.
  • Skylines and similar cars are too high, they wobble. Lambos and other hyper-cars are best by far.
  • Overall, I do think that a good 4wd car will probably suit our racing best, they're more forgiving.
  • Stopping is an issue down the Mulsane, cars with no wing are faster, but less stable.
  • Setting wing to minimum is enough to really sit the car down when hitting the brakes hard - it gave me 3 seconds a lap with the Vantage.
  • 5 speed gears are fine in testing, but you need a 6 speed or above to really make use of slipstreaming and subsequent high top end driving.

Monday 5 March 2012

Practice lap...

Here's one I prepared earlier:

If you really can't wait till the end... it's a 3:54:08 laptime of La Sarthe, logged as a clean lap in a 587pp Lexus LFA.

It is a quick lap.

But actually it doesn't really look it. I can say that it was an absolute pig to get round the track, and whilst I could put out a few crackers in practice, in race I think it would be hopeless - it just doesn't handle or stop at all well. In fact I think it hit something over 330Kph (in new money), great, but essentially useless when we have boost on in our races!

Still, as an exercise in being the quickest around the circuit in a 587pp road car that isn't my GT1 Nissan r390 (not that I'm bitter), then I think I've nailed it... Evidence of quicker welcome!

League Race #8 La Sarthe (final attempt)

Hey folks,

News:
We're re-running the season finale this Thursday the 8th March.
In any case this is the season ending event - so those of us with ISPs that are shizzle should either spend the night with friends or see if there's anything they can do to rectify the situation.

George mate, have a chat with Baloo and compare disaster notes... And for all, I'll not be changing my connection unless a compelling reason to do so (i.e. we're all screwed). The reason is that I've already moved my PS3 into a DMZ (geek alert), and further fettling could stuff it for all of us. And of course my connection works outright, and on this and other games...

Testing:
To that end, I'll set my room up as La Sarthe, and we'll plan to do an official test session on Wednesday. I'll either set up a race cycle, or more likely call out if folks are ready - and we'll do single lap races and free race testing. Personally I have a plethora of rocket sleds I need to test, starting in about 5 minutes time...

Official Race Info (again):
Event Date: 08-Mar-2012
Time: 9:00 PM
Race Starts: 9:15 PM
Lounge: FCT GT5 Andrew
Track: Le Mans / La Sarthe Time Change.
Laps: 6
Car: 587pp Road Cars
Tyres: Race Soft

Other info:
Remember, turning up to this race will get you 4 points, even if you don't race, the crazy world that is doubling the season's final race points eh!

And, finally, I'll leave a short clip demonstrating why I'll not be pushing to use my Merc race car in the race, assuming GT5 is true to life...

Now uploaded and posted here for posterity...

Good race folks. We'll do it all again next week!

League Race ~scratched~ Le Mans24 Minutes

It's getting boring saying ace race... but of course that's what it was again.

Lowlight was that George got kicked, so unless any objections we'll re-race next week and see how we go. George, probably time to read up on NATs I think there's something in that that's causing issues...

Highlights were many - Paul, you had a blinder on your bender, if you'd not been blind you'd have made the bend...
And I'd say that the gap between the 4wd and 2wd cars isn't so big, but it just seemed easy to pass you Rod - and that's no reflection on your driving for sure, just seemed your car had no legs.

Unlike yours Baloo - that thing doesn't have a top end limit I think. Watching in car it doesn't seem to have much sprint, but regularly passed all of us down the various straights.

Evan, you've lost the most by this not being a points race, but as you said on the night, it wouldn't be the same without the whole crew being in on the finish line - what was it, 10 seconds across the whole field?

Movie is uploading as I write this, but I'm not sitting up for 3 hours whilst it does it - I'll send out the link tomorrow folks.

For now, how about a few pics:

The start of the end of the season (but is it?)

Not factory standard...

Paul's angry car.

The loneliness of the long distance driver (who at the time was last).

Dawn of a new error.

Last lap and as per the crew is mixing it up.
